Become A More Powerful
Cross Cultural Communicator...
And Use That Power To Win With Diversity, Breakdown Barriers And Get An Unfair Advantage In Business...

"You Can Easily Master The Simple Strategies Of Cross Cultural Communication To Manage A Diverse Team To Increase Effectiveness & Better Performance!"

From the desk of Dr Deborah Swallow
Dear Global Manager,

My name is Debbie Swallow, and I've got ONE question to ask that could change your career and business forever...

"Are you looking for improved international business performance, reducing the cost of international trade or making quicker returns in new international markets?"

The transaction costs in international trade are high, which means that anything that prevents success can cost thousands.

Organisations cannot afford to get things wrong!

Whether in negotiating, understanding new markets, building remote teams or engaging with an overseas workforce companies and individuals need to have the edge over their competitors - they need to know how to manage diversity successfully.

In today's economic climate, you need three fundamental skills, more than ever before, to raise your game in overseas markets:

  •  a higher level of focused communication,
  • greater cross-cultural understanding, and
  • better cultural diversity management .

Each marketplace has its own parameters for how business people in it like to be communicated with.  It is a vital pre requisite for business people to now 'do business' with a greater knowledge, understanding and respect for different cultures.

The trouble is few of us know HOW to develop intercultural communication competence and most of us are blind to it. Few of us realise we do business the way we do because it is dictated by our culture.

In our ignorance we expect certain behaviors
should lead to specific outcomes.

This ‘ignorance' comes from the fact that our culture is so deeply ingrained in us that we are unable to analyse it. We just accept it as being ‘the way we do things around here' without further thought, which means we are NEVER as effective as we could be in an international arena.

"Organisations gladly pay me $5,000 per day to help manage diversity better to increase their effectiveness in an international setting...

... and I'm the best person to help YOU!"

Let me tell you how I got into all of this...

During the 90s I worked extensively in Scandinavia and the Nordic countries as a business consultant helping companies internationalize. One day, soon after I started, I was sitting with a group of Finnish executives helping them to rehearse their sales pitches. They could speak English well and even tell jokes, but their presentations left much to be desired.

Quite frankly they were boring!

A few days later, I was in London reheasing a group of British executives for their sales pitches to be delivered in Scandanavia. They weren't boring but their presentations just didn't have enough substance.

Suddenly it hit me ...

each group was delivering their presentations in the way they
were used to...

A way that was expected in their country (and worked) - but in a way that did not travel successfully. I then began to re-live some of my own experiences and realised that there were cultural differences that we should all be taking account of.

This led me to recognise that

each culture has its own 'hot buttons'

and, when selling on an international stage, it is critically important that you press all the right 'hot buttons' if you want to make a sale!

So I began to research the 'hot buttons' for forty-five different countries. But it didn't stop there...

I soon became aware of the cultural differences in:

  • negotiating
  • managing people
  • opening relationships, and
  • in closing a deal.

A new world opened to me, so I decided to specialize in intercultural communication and international business so I could bring these insights to busy international executives. That's when I started my own company 4C International Ltd, a firm specialising in bridging the culture gap.

Like me, you probably realise that people are different all over the world, but in business you thought they would be similar. After all, business is business. But what I had noticed was that there were real, deep and hidden differences that were to do with people's expectations.  Sadly few people bother to adapt their style when involved with international trade.

You're probably aksing yourself,
"What are these differences?"

Let me tell you about my worst nightmare which will explain just one difference.  I was invited to attend an interview for that international business consultants job where I had to give a prepared business presentation (30 minutes duration including time for questions).  My audience consisted of seven people most of whom were Finnish, with one East German and one Estonian. I delivered my presentation in my usual British way, delivered over twenty minutes leaving just under ten minutes for the Q&A session.

As I finished talking, I turned to the audience and asked, "Any questions?"

The room stayed silent!

No one asked a thing. I was quaking in my shoes.  My heart missed several beats and I wondered what on earth I had done wrong.  Eventually, the Finnish boss smiled and asked a generalised question followed by the East German. That was that - and my interview was over.

I left having no idea whether I had done well or not! However, a few days later I learned I had got the job.

One month later, I was delivering a presentation to a group of Finnish executives in my usual way. Again I came to the Q&A session and asked, "Any questions?"

Again, I was greeted by total silence.

After what seemed like an age (quaking in my shoes, heart missing beats, what have I done wrong), someone started to giggle and asked, "Debbie, don't you know we are Finnish?"  "What's being Finnish got to do with asking questions?" I asked.

With a purposeful nod and a glint of compassion in his eyes, the gentleman replied...

"In Finland, we don't ask questions. We expect you to tell us what you want us to hear.  If you leave anything out it is because you think it isn't necessary. We listen to what you have to say, we weigh it up and, if we don't like it, we ask the next person to come in."

In other words,we only get one chance to make an impression!

How different this is to the way we work
in the US and in Britain!

Here, the Q&A sessions are important to help the audience contextualize our information in their real-world experiences - and, of course, for us to demonstrate our depth of knowledge and expertise.

Talk about culture shock! I was almost traumatised. Little did I know that there ended my first lesson in intercultural communication - but many more were to come.

Like me ... you're probably asking yourself:

  • What are cultural differences?
  • How important are they?
  • Where do I start?
  • Do I have to learn 101 different ways for 101 different countries?
  • Is spending my time and hard earned money going to pay off?
  • Which books and programs do I study?
  • Why should I change from doing what I'm currently doing?
  • How do I know if I have what it takes to be a successful international manager?

Investing your time reading the words I've laid out on this website is a testament to your commitment to NOT being average and ordinary and wanting to be really successful in the international arena.

I can relate to where you are right now and how you feel because it was only a few short years ago that I was voraciously searching for my answers. I was suddenly confronted with a world of difference and knew I could be so much more effective in my job...

If only I knew what these differences were!

I bought every theoretical text book, went through every coursebook, studied every expert how-to guide, and read just about every single thing on the subject... and even did a doctorate! Then I realised if all this made me a more effective and powerful intercultural communicator, it could work for other people too!

So, HOW can I help YOU?

If you were to attend all the seminars I've attended, read all the books I've read, and studied all the programs I've paid for and studied ... you could easily invest over $25,000 just in the costs alone.

Depending on the value you place on your time ... your investment to learn what I've learned could be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

That is why the powerful insights, tips, and techniques I have carefully laid out in my illustrated, video-embedded e-book

"How to Avoid the Cultural Roadblocks in Global Business Communication"

would be a huge bargain at a price of $497 or even $297 ... just a fraction of the costs I've incurred.
